  • Fuel efficiency upsurge: expect a rapid improvement in fuel efficiency for conventional vehicles, as well as a growth in hybrid cars. Greening of the world car fleet is happening rapidly. Consultant JD Power estimates a third of emission cuts by 2020 will come from improving petrol and diesel engines; 14% from electric or hybrid vehicles.
  • Batteries & green tech, because batteries will increasingly power vehicles of all kinds, not just electric cars. Today’s standard 12 volt car battery will grow in capacity – potentially to 36 volts – to accommodate new green, fuel-efficient systems as well as a multitude of on-board devices from back-up cameras, heads-up displays, GPS units, smartphones and entertainment systems.
  • Connectivity: like in airliners, manufacturers are racing to equip cars with wireless Internet capability for GPS navigation, Facebook Command Centres, smartphone support, web-based audio/video entertainment, ‘Streetview’ navigation, along with electronics including back-up cameras, collision avoidance and lane-change alert systems, automatic parking, and eventually autonomous-driving vehicles like those pioneered by Google, Ford and Mercedes-Benz.
  • Better trucks, since electric and hybrid cars are only part of the green answer. About 70% of all EU freight moves by road, yet energy efficiency of trucks is as low as it was 40 years ago. Expect a giant leap in new trucks’ fuel efficiency – at least by 40% – in the next decade.
  • Traffic management: digital technology is being applied outside the vehicle as well. Major strides in web- and satellite-based traffic controls are in beta evaluation, allowing vehicles on high-speed motorways to safely follow in very close proximity guided by GPS and autonomous-driving systems to increase vehicle volume and reduce tailbacks. Other advances are also in-works.
